I'm with you on this one. I've been wanting to learn Chinese for a very long time; to the point where I even bought my girlfriend some materials to help HER learn, since she expressed an interest before I did. I should probably steal them back!

You have a benefit though-you have real people who speak the language fluently that you can talk to and learn from. That's an incredible advantage. :) There's a joke that some people tell outside of the States (namely Canada) that goes something like this:

"What do you call a person who can speak many languages?
...Multilingual.
What do you call a person who can only speak two languages?
...Bilingual.
What do you call a person who can only speak one language?
...American."

Good luck!

I was sent to Chinese school as a child too (essentially useless for me in my non-chinese speaking household and actually non-chinese household), but it didn't really stick. I did take a few classes in college, but they were quite useless as well... It's a tough language to learn without someone actively teaching you. I think it would be worth it to learn, but only if you'd have the opportunity to actually use it while you were learning (and after as well). Without practice it will fall away.

found you on the vox frontpage.
